What to put on your quotation request
- Size
- Conductor size in sq mm: 1.0 for lighting, 1.5 for lights, fans and 6 A points, 2.5 for 16 A power points, 4 to 6 for air conditioners, geysers and sub-mains. Your electrician sizes the final run for load and length.
- Insulation
- FR, FR-LSH or HFFR, as the site specification asks.
- Colours
- Red, yellow and blue for phases, black for neutral, green or green-yellow for earth.
- Coils
- Number of coils per size and colour (house wire is usually sold in 90 m coils).
- Multicore
- Number of cores and size for flexible cable.

In Indian house wiring, 1.0 to 1.5 sq mm copper wire is the usual choice for lighting and fan circuits, and 2.5 sq mm for 16 A power points. The electrician should confirm the size against the load and the length of the run.
How are wires quoted?
By coil, per size and colour. House wire is usually sold in 90 m coils, so a list such as "1.5 sq mm red, 10 coils" is all the sales desk needs.
